We are currently looking for a Senior Manager, Energy Market & Policy, based out of St. Thomas, ON


Our mission has started. Volkswagen Group’s largest cell factory in St. Thomas will carry out all battery activities – from processing raw materials to developing a unified Volkswagen battery to managing the European and North American gigafactories. Headquartered in Salzgitter, Germany, we are experiencing the transformation of mobility up close. Our goal is to contribute a positive impact to our global society, the environment and the economy. In this role, you will be instrumental in our commitment to sustainability, representing our organization in policy discussions within the Ontario energy market. Your primary focus will be on advocating for green energy initiatives and shaping the integration of sustainable practices within our operations.

Your contributions will be pivotal in navigating the complex landscape of the energy market, ensuring our reliance on renewable energy sources and positioning our company as a leader in sustainability. In this function the Senior Manager, Energy Market & Policy directly reports to the Senior Director, Interim CFO of the company.


This is a flex hybrid model, requiring 2 days in the St. Thomas office


Primary Responsibilities

Policy Advocacy and Influence (40%):

  • Lead efforts represent PowerCo in policy discussions within the Ontario energy market, advocating for changes that enhance alignment with PowerCo's Renewable Energy goals.
  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders, participate in relevant forums, and engage in active lobbying to drive policy changes.
  • Regulatory Monitoring and Analysis (25%):
  • Monitor, analyze, and interpret regulatory changes, policies, and legislation affecting the energy market in Ontario.
  • Keep abreast of industry developments and assess their implications on PowerCo.

Electricity Insights and Communication (15%):

  • Provide expert guidance and advice on PowerCo’s energy approach, ensuring it remains aligned with the dynamic market conditions.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of all stakeholders.
  • Providing market information and an outlook on Global Adjustment costs in Ontario, thereby enhancing PowerCo's financial transparency regarding electricity cost.
  • Providing the energy management team with information relevant to its efforts to evaluate electricity demand-side impact, such as effects of the optimization of load factors and load-management e.g., regarding Global Adjustment.

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnership Management (15%):

  • Build and nurture relationships with cross-functional teams, external industry partners, and government bodies to ensure effective collaboration and support for PowerCo's energy objectives.

Green Energy Initiatives (5%):

  • Identify opportunities for renewable energy sourcing, including (but not limited to) new renewable energy projects, projects facing repowering, etc.
  • Analyze options for Clean Energy Credit (CEC) sourcing from a financial and sustainability point of view.


Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., Energy Policy, Energy Economics, Environmental Sciences, Business, Engineering), or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in the Ontario Energy Market is required, with consideration for candidates with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • A proven track record of influencing and navigating energy regulations and policies.
  • Demonstrated experience in renewable energy initiatives and technologies.
  • Previous experience in managing teams or projects is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of energy policies and regulations in Ontario, with the ability to navigate and influence policy changes.
  • Proficiency in monitoring and interpreting regulatory changes affecting the energy market.
  • Comprehensive familiarity with renewable energy incentives, technologies, and their integration into the market.
  • Proficiency in assessing and communication cost impacts associated with energy initiatives, including Global Adjustment.
  • Exceptional skills in building and managing relationships with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex energy concepts and proposals.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess market dynamics.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving market conditions and contribute to innovative solutions.
  • Occasional travel within Ontario and Germany HQ is expected (total travel 10-30%)
  • Overtime may be required to meet ramp-up deadlines
  • German language skills are considered an asset
